2024-04-06

For those of you who follow us on Facebook, you will have seen our "Saturday Stretches" every Saturday. In this series, physiotherapists share stretching exercises for different parts of the body to help you reduce chronic pain in joints and muscles, and to make you more comfortable while exercising. Let me summarize a 15-minute full-body stretching exercise that is suitable for the elderly, middle-aged and young people.

  1. Neck Stretch (2 minutes):
    • Gently rotate your head a few times from side to side.
    • Slowly bend your head forward and feel the stretch in your neck for a few seconds.
    • Tilt your head back and feel the stretch in your neck, hold for a few seconds.
    • Gently tilt your head from side to side for a few seconds.
  2. Shoulder Stretch (3 minutes):
    • Place your hands at your sides and gently raise your arms upward to feel the stretch in your shoulders, hold for a few seconds.
    • Cross your arms in front of your chest and gently extend your arms outward, feel the shoulder stretch, hold for a few seconds.
    • Place your hands on top of your head and gently stretch back, feel the stretch in your shoulders and hold for a few seconds.
  3. Spinal Stretch (4 minutes):
    • Sit in a chair and gently rotate your upper body a few times from side to side.
    • Gently bend your body forward, keeping your arms as close to your legs as possible, and feel the stretch in your spine, hold for a few seconds.
    • Gently rotate your upper body a few times from side to side.
  4. Lower body stretch (4 minutes):
    • Standing, gently lift one foot and place it on the thigh of the other foot, keeping your balance, and feel the stretch in your lower leg, hold for a few seconds, then switch feet and do the same.
    • Spread your feet shoulder-width apart, bend your body to one side, feel the stretch in your thighs and lower back, hold for a few seconds, then switch sides and do the same.

A 15-minute daily stretching program can have three health benefits:

  1. Improve flexibility and joint mobility: Stretching can help increase muscle and joint flexibility, reduce stiffness and improve range of motion.
  2. Relaxation and stress reduction: Stretching helps to relax muscles and reduce stress and tension. It improves blood circulation and increases oxygen supply, which in turn improves mental health and emotional state.
  3. Injury and pain prevention: Regular stretching increases the flexibility of muscles and soft tissues, reducing the risk of injury during daily activities and sports. It can also reduce pain and discomfort caused by muscle tension.
